Cookies, Treats and Yummy Things
Recipes for Dogs

You don't have to be a cooking school graduate to make yummy recipes for dogs. You'll have fun and your dog will think you are the greatest! Here are some of Dottie's favorites.

Basic Bone Cookies:

Make these recipes for dogs as is or vary the ingredients for a slightly different taste treat.

3 cups of all-purpose flour
1/2 cup of non-fat dry milk
1/2 tsp of salt
1/2 tsp of baking powder
1/2 cup low-sodium chicken bouillon powder (or beef bouillon)
2 large eggs
1 cup of warm water

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Mix all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Slowly add the warm water and eggs. Mix well. The dough will feel stiff.
  • Knead the mixture until the dough is smooth and easy to handle. Form it into a ball.
  • Place the ball on a floured surface. Roll it out to 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick (or thicker if desired).
  • Use a 3-inch bone shaped cookie cutter to cut out the dough.
  • Place the bones on greased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove cookie sheets from oven and turn the dog bones over. Put back in oven for another 5 minutes or so until they are golden brown on both sides.
  • Remove from oven, let cool, and store in an airtight container.

For crispier dog cookies, turn off the oven and let them sit inside on the cookie sheets for a few hours.

Here's a variation your dog will like! Add 1 tsp of minced garlic to the recipe above and give your dogs for a real taste treat. If the dough becomes too sticky, add more flour.

NOTE: The use of garlic in recipes for dogs has become a controversial subject. It is true that large amounts of raw garlic (as in the bulbs) may be toxic to your pet. However, vets who practice natural (holistic) medicine use garlic as a health supplement to treat pets and garlic is used in commercial pet products. It has also been used for centuries in other countries.

Peanut Butter Cheerios Balls

This recipe for dogs makes soft, crumbly balls that smell wonderful when they are cooking.

1/4 cup of natural peanut butter (your choice of type)
2 cups of honey nut cheerios
1 cup of all purpose flour
1/2 cup of vegetable oil
2 large eggs

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Warm the peanut butter in the microwave about 1 minute to soften it
  • Add the rest of the ingredients, mixing gently. Be sure to mix thoroughly.
  • Form rounded teaspoons of dough into balls, squeezing firmly to press everything together.
  • Place balls on lightly greased cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until the bottom of the balls is a golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and let cool thoroughly before placing into an airtight container.

Eat 'Em Up!

Because most home-made treat recipes for dogs do not include preservatives, they will normally not last more than 7 to 10 days before going bad. However, since they taste so good, I'm sure YOUR dog won't allow you to let them go bad! He or she will be begging for these delicious goodies every time you go into the kitchen.

A Word of Caution

Most cooked foods that you share with your dog won't hurt them, especially if they are only getting small amounts such as the little bit of leftovers on your plate. However, there ARE human foods which are toxic to your pet and should be avoided. Some of the most dangerous are chocolate, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, onions (including onion powder), artificial sweetners, and fatty foods (including turkey skin which has a very high fat content).
